DID YOU KNOW? You Don’t Have to Earn God’s Love.
Read: Ephesians 2
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God–not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).
I’ll never forget the feeling of earning my first paycheck. I loved the idea of being compensated for the work that I did. It pushed me to work harder because the harder I worked, and the better work I produced, the more I would be paid.
I realized sometimes I treat my relationship with God like a business transaction. The more “good” I do, the more He will “pay me” with His love. I think, “If I can only serve more, love more, or give more…then God will love me.” But one day, in the midst of my striving to be a “good Christian,” the Spirit spoke to me, “Ali, my love is a gift to you. Will you receive it?”
Wow. In my effort to be better, I had been rejecting a gift from my loving Father. His love cannot be earned. Nor is it contingent on the “works” we do or don’t do. It is an unconditional gift. And He wants us to accept it–free of charge.
Dear Lord, please forgive me for treating my relationship with You as a business transaction. Thank you that I don’t have to do anything to earn Your love, but it is a gift that You give me, to receive in faith, so that I may know You more. Show me what it’s like to live freely and fully in this gracious gift of love. Amen.
